We had a wonderful field trip to the Shelburne Museum last Thursday. We learned about life long ago in Vermont. Students had the opportunity to make ice cream with a churn, dip wicks into wax to make homemade candles, and see toys that children used to play with long ago. They also got to learn some old yard games that were popular and visit a schoolhouse, where our leader pretended she was a schoolteacher, and the children were expected to bow, curtsy, and call her "Teacher." In the afternoon, we broke off into smaller groups and were given the chance to freely explore the grounds. Many found time to visit the Ticonderoga, as well as the old carousel. I heard many second graders saying, "this was the best day ever!"
