Ox-Cart Trading

We read the book the “Ox-Cart Man” by Donald Hall, and students learned how long ago each member of the family worked to produce goods that were traded or bartered for other goods. Students made their own wagons and goods, and traded with other classmates!

Shelburne Museum Field Trip

We had a wonderful field trip to the Shelburne Museum last Thursday. We learned about life long ago in Vermont.  Students had the opportunity to make ice cream with a churn, dip wicks into wax to make homemade candles, and see toys that children used to play with long ago.  They also got to learn some old yard games that were popular and visit a schoolhouse, where our leader pretended she was a schoolteacher, and the children were expected to bow, curtsy, and call her "Teacher." In the afternoon, we broke off into smaller groups and were given the chance to freely explore the grounds.  Many found time to visit the Ticonderoga, as well as the old carousel. I heard many second graders saying, "this was the best day ever!"

A Visit from the Hinesburg Fire Department!

We had some special visitors today! A few Hinesburg firefighters visited our school to teach us about fire safety. We learned all about the protective clothing that firefighters wear when fighting fires including pants, jacket, and hood. We even got to see how the mask and breathing apparatus work. It was very exciting! The firefighter explained to the children that if there is ever a fire that they should yell for help and never hide from a fire fighter who is trying to help them. Later in the day we learned all about the fire and rescue trucks outside in front of the school. The firefighters showed us all of the parts and explained their purpose and answered the children's questions. Thank you Hinesburg Firefighters!
